Volkswagen recently announced that they are going to recognize the 70th anniversary of the UN Refugee Agency convention by awarding 70 separate scholarships to young refugees working towards a university degree. The Volkswagen Group has focused on refugee assistance for a number of years now, and they have a long-standing relationship with UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe, which is the German partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The UNHCR reports that about 30 percent of young people all over the world have access to higher education. Unfortunately, just 5 percent of refugees have this same opportunity.
The Volkswagen Group feels there is great importance in regard to education for our future generations. Providing equal opportunities for furthering one's education is imperative for future success. The relationship between UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe and the Volkswagen Group, Refugee Aid initiative, has been going on for six years. Over that time, there have been shifts in what VW has found important. In addition to providing emergency aid to refugees in Germany, there will be a more important focus on refugees moving forward. The goal will be to provide more educational opportunities along with preparation for future integration into the labor market.
