Although the Polo may not be as well-known to some, it remains one of Volkswagen's most popular vehicles. With production beginning over 50 years ago, the Polo has achieved global success, selling more than 20 million units. First introduced in 1975, this practical Volkswagen model has built a reputation for its quality design, distinctive style, innovation, and affordability. To celebrate the Polo’s legacy, VW is showcasing two special Polo models at the Bremen Classic Motorshow.
A Fresh Look at a Classic
To honor the Polo, Volkswagen's Classic team has selected two models to feature at the Bremen Classic Motorshow in northern Germany, an exhibition dedicated to classic vehicles. One of the showcased models is the Polo L, which debuted in 1975 as Volkswagen’s first iteration of the Polo. With its compact, boxy design, the Polo L was an affordable and practical choice for families. At launch, it came equipped with a 0.9-liter engine, reaching speeds of up to 82 miles per hour. Buyers could also opt for additional features such as carpeting, side trim strips, and air conditioning for a more comfortable experience. The Polo L offered seating for up to four passengers, a folding second-row seat, and nearly 32 cubic feet of storage space. To enhance reliability, the vehicle was engineered with a water-cooled system to help prevent overheating.
Alongside the family-friendly Polo L, Volkswagen is also presenting the hill climb Polo at the Bremen Motorshow. This high-performance version of the Polo was designed for racing and was actively used in motorsports for nearly two decades. After being retired for a time, Volkswagen reintroduced the hill climb Polo in 2022, bringing it back to competition in the International Hill Climb Cup. The updated model featured key enhancements, including a shorter gear ratio for improved performance and a rollover cage to enhance safety.
