Specs at a Glance

Very few automakers produce cars as heavy on practicality, personality, and sensibility like Volkswagen does. The automaker is known for its high-performance machines with German style and build quality. 2018 models of both the VW Jetta and Passat are exceptional vehicles with superior engine line-ups and ride qualities. The Jetta is a compact sedan that many consider as the brand's entry-level while the Passat is a midsize sedan with a huge fan base.

Volkswagen sells the 2018 Jetta with a choice of three turbocharged engines. A 1.4-liter I-4 unit making 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque powers the entry-level S and SE trims. The engine mates with either a six-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission. The 2018 Jetta receives a 170-hp, 184-lb-ft 1.8-liter four-cylinder unit for the Sport and SEL trims. The 1.8-liter employs a six-speed exclusively. The top-of-the-range GLI carries a 2.0-liter four-cylinder manufacturing 210 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can combine this engine with either a six-speed dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. EPA estimates place the 1.4-liter at 28/38 (city/hwy) mpg* and 28/40 mpg* when linked to the auto and manual transmissions respectively. The 1.8-liter returns 24/33 mpg* while the 2.0-liter delivers 24/33 mpg*.

The 2018 Passat gets two engine choices: a turbo-four and a V6. The first 2.0-liter turbo-four engine releases 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It sends power to the wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The 3.6-liter V-6 produces 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque links to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The four-cylinder gives back 25/36 mpg* city/highway while the V-6 returns 20/28 mpg*.

The 2018 VW Jetta defies class expectations to offer minimal detailing and crisp lines for a more upscale look. It features alloy wheels of varying sizes: from 16s on the S to 18s on the GLI. A new chrome grille design and a more imposing bumper mark the new year's exterior upgrades. Inside, the Jetta provides a symmetrical dash layout and shades of black, gray, and beige. All controls are logically-placed and become second nature in no time.

The Passat three-box shape is dressed up with alloy wheels and hints of chrome. Wheel sizes extend to 19 inches and the GT trim includes a thin red line on the grille and Golf GTI-like blacked-out exterior trim. The cabin is even better with a high degree of functionality and clean lines that give it a typical-VW classy demeanor. Climate and audio controls are intuitively placed, the cloth upholstery is nicely and thickly woven, and the leatherette trim looks like the real deal. The SEL gets real leather.

The 2018 Jetta is home to a myriad of safety equipment and a recipient of excellent crash protection ratings. All models receive a six-airbag system, anti-lock brakes, a rearview camera, and stability control. Blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alerts are available on higher trims.

The 2018 VW Passat comes standard with highly advanced safety equipment including stability control, anti-lock brakes, a rearview camera, six airbags, blind-spot monitors, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alerts. Adaptive cruise control is available on the SE and higher trims.
