What's New for the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle?

The Volkswagen Beetle is a modern classic that has undergone countless iterations since it was first introduced in the United States in 1950. Since the vehicle will be discontinued after the 2018 model year, this is your last chance to get your hands on a brand-new Beetle. Here's what you can expect from the latest version of this classic compact vehicle. The Volkswagen Beetle sees just a few updates for 2018. First, the base engine, previously a 1.8-liter four-cylinder, has been replaced with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-four. If you opt for the base trim, you can now add a new Style and Comfort package that includes keyless entry, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic headlights. The SE trim has been updated with a standard sunroof and automatic climate control. Volkswagen has also released a special edition of the Beetle for 2018. The Coast model features a teal exterior, distinctive alloy wheels, and plaid seats. It's also equipped with rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot warning.

2018 Beetle Trims & Features

The Beetle is available as either a two-door hatchback coupe or a convertible. It's available in four trims in addition to the Coast model: The S is equipped with a 5-inch touchscreen with USB and Bluetooth connectivity and an eight-speaker audio system. Other features include heated front seats, power windows, cruise control, and heated side mirrors. Upgrade to the SE for a larger (6.3-inch) touchscreen, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD and satellite radio, proximity key entry, faux leather upholstery, and the ability to receive parental alerts, emergency assists, and remote vehicle access on your smartphone.

Choose the fully loaded SEL to enjoy amenities that include navigation, blind spot monitoring, a premium Fender sound system, rear cross-traffic alert, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

With the new standard two-liter turbo-four, you'll get 170 horses and 184 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic. The R-Line SEL, available only as a coupe, offers a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 210 horsepower, a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, electronic differential locking, and upgraded brakes.

Volkswagen Beetle Safety

2018 VW Beetle LeftThe 2018 Beetle is equipped with a rearview camera on every trim except the Dune. Other high-tech driver assistance features, including blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert, are standard on the SEL trim. Though crash test data is not yet available for the 2018 model, it is expected to meet or exceed the performance of last year's model. The 2017 Beetle received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration as well as the highest scores in four out of five categories from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
